About The News in Data

The News in Data turns the news into charts. Each story starts with public data, answers one question with one clear chart, and ends with a note on how we did it and links to every source, so readers can check the work.

The project began in 2016, when Samuel W. Bennett started posting charts online, and the work gained significant traction. The News in Data is now the home for it, with stories on sports, business, AI and tech, culture and science.

Samuel lives in Colorado's Vail Valley, where he runs a school and helps with nonprofit work. He is co-chair of the Bindu Sky Memorial Fund.

How we work

We use primary sources wherever we can, such as government agencies, sports leagues and company filings. We say when a figure comes from a single source or when the data can't answer a question, and we correct mistakes in the story itself.
